Dr. Smith was born in Minneapolis, MN on July 14, 1927 and died on April 5, 2015 in Brooklyn, NY at the age of 87. In 1945 he joined the Navy right before his High School graduation from Blake School. After the end of WWII, Alan attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1949. He took pre-med courses at the University of Minnesota where he met his future wife, Joyce Elaine Schlemmer in chemistry class. Alan rode his bicycle to work almost every day until his retirement in 1987. He spent much time at his cabin in the Adirondacks near Owl Pond, camping with his family, hiking, chopping wood, fishing, skiing, boating and picking berries. At home in Bay Ridge he tended his garden with Joyce and his cat. He was a fan of the Yankees and came out to support the runners at the NYC Marathon. He is predeceased by his eldest son, David and leaves his devoted wife of 61 years, Joyce and two children: Margaret "Peggy" G. Smith of Manhattan and Peter A. Smith, MD, of Chicago, Il (Mary K.
